It's some neighborhood. The film industry had a strong presence here in the ‘30s. There was a lot of who's who doing who knows what. But it’s still here. The grandeur. You’ll be walking down one of the avenues, visiting shops and cafes or beating around the reservoir, smelling the Eucalyptus, looking at the mountains and it happens. The grace. The ease.
Some say it’s all in the light. The way it is out here. It’s different. It doesn’t shine, it glows. You want to take a bath in it. And you can.
It’s like that painting by Matisse. Luxe, Calme et Volupté. If you ask me, the best thing to do when you're staying here is nothing at all. Just open the doors and the windows and let the outside come in and think about all of the exciting things there are to do today and don't do them. Birds of Paradise grow like daisies here. Now if you could just smell the Jasmine...
Of course, if you do need to get out there is no shortage of options. Silver Lake is a mecca of modernist architecture. Next door to Maltman and Edgecliffe are structures designed by Rudolph Schindler. A drive around the neighborhood, or a walk around the reservoir will give you a taste of its myriad of architectural styles. A little further off is Griffith Park, where you can visit the Observatory (where the denouement to Rebel Without a Cause was filmed), work on your golf game, play tennis, or go hiking. Dodger's Stadium and the legendary Greek Theater are also just five minutes away.
If you are up for a serious urban safari, there is Hollywood, Downtown LA, and the art galleries in Culver City. Also nearby are Burbank and Pasadena.
Now let's talk staples. In the neighborhood there are grocery stores (Trader Joe's and Gelson's), video stores, dry cleaners and gyms. If it's Saturday morning, you're in luck. Walk down to the Silver Lake Farmers Market (open every Saturday from 8:00 am -1:30 pm) for fresh produce and flowers.
Coming and going is easy. Berendo, Maltman, Edgecliffe and Elevado are a fifteen minute drive from the Burbank Airport and 30-45 minutes to LAX. Several bus lines run on Sunset Blvd, walking distance from the house.
